Athlete 1980 - 1983
Steve Lopes, class of 1984, is selected to the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame for his contributions in the sport of football.
Lopes was a three-sport letterman who achieved his highest honors in football when he was selected to the 1983 NAIA Division II and Kodak All-America teams as an offensive tackle.
He started three years at that position and lettered four years on teams that compiled a total record of 35 wins, 5 losses and 1 tie and won Linfield's first national football championship in 1982.
He helped open the holes for 30 rushing touchdowns in 1982, at the time second most ever by a Wildcat team.
Lopes said one of his best memories of Linfield is that he started on the offensive line next to his brother, Lance, a tight end, for two seasons.
Lopes was previously inducted into the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002 with his teammates on the 1982 championship team.
He also lettered in wrestling two years and golf one year.
Now Dr. Steve Lopes after earning his doctorate of education at University of Pennsylvania, Lopes is senior associate athletics director at the University of Southern California, responsible for the business and financial affairs of the entire department.
He has been in the USC athletic department for 21 years, and has been an associate athletic director since 1995.
He helps others who aspire to a career in sports management as Programs Coordinator for the Sports Management Institute.
Lopes resides in Palos Verdes, California, with his wife, Helaine, and their two children, Jennifer, 13, and Mathew, 11.
