Randy Mueller of the Class of 1983 ranks high in a long line of talented quarterbacks who played football at Linfield.
Mueller quarterbacked the 1982 NAIA Division II national championship team. In the title game, the Wildcats defeated William Jewell (Mo.) 33-15. He was named the Most Valuable Player, throwing three touchdown passes and completing 18 of 33 passes with no interceptions.
Mueller started every game that year, leading a team that went undefeated at 12-0. He was named Linfield’s most valuable player, received all-Northwest Conference honors and was an NAIA honorable mention All-American.
Over the course of the 1982 season, Mueller racked up 2,180 passing yards, which ranks 11th all-time at Linfield. He also has the ninth-highest single season output for total offense (2,430 yards) and ranks in the top 15 in six other individual season categories and five individual career categories.
Mueller was also a member of the 1980 NWC Championship team that went 9-0 during the regular season.
After graduating from Linfield, Mueller worked his way through the ranks of several National Football League front offices. He began his career with the Seattle Seahawks in 1983 as an assistant in the pro personnel department. He was promoted twice, eventually becoming the Vice President of Football Operations with the New Orleans Saints, during which time he earned the NFL Executive of the Year Award, as presented by Sporting News. Mueller served as an NFL analyst at ESPN for three years before landing another General Manager position with the Miami Dolphins.
Mueller is currently is the Senior Executive of Football Operations for the San Diego Chargers, a position he has held since 2008.
