SHERMAN, Texas – Sophomore
Miki Vermeulen accounted for 18 points and 13 rebounds in Linfield's first victory over Austin College at Hughey Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The 'Cats outscored the Kangaroos in every quarter on their way to a 63-51 win.
Janessa Yniguez and
Gillyan Landis each tallied 13 points with
Ella Koebelin adding eight. The Wildcats overcame a tough shooting night behind the three-point arc combining for four made threes on 20 attempts. Linfield finished 46.2 percent from the field and outrebounded Austin College 52-23.
Austin College finished 30.6 percent from the field and made five of 20 three-point attempts. Amarys Cuellar and Megan O'Neil tied for the team lead with 11 points each. The Kangaroos scored 20 points off 23 Linfield turnovers.
Vermeulen scored six points in the opening quarter as Linfield grabbed a 17-13 lead after the first 10 minutes. Linfield bested a 50 percent shooting first quarter by combining for a 60 percent shooting second frame, taking a 35-30 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats only combined for 11 points in the third quarter but only allowed nine points from the Kangaroos (1-2). Linfield closed out the victory behind Vermeulen's and Yniguez's 12 points combined in the final quarter.
