McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Powered by three double-digit scorers, George Fox held off the season sweep to beat Linfield 56-54 at Ted Wilson Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Peyton Bergevin's season-high of 12 points led the Wildcats scoring effort.
Amelia Solt also tallied double digits with 10 while
Miki Vermeulen and
Gillyan Landis finished with nine points each. Vermeulen also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Linfield (11-13, 6-9 NWC) shot 51 percent from the field on 45 attempts and made 3-10 shots from behind the arc.
Erin Yoshitake led all scorers with 16 points. Alyssa Wells tallied 12 points while Ella Roberts added 11. George Fox (6-16, 6-9 NWC) shot 36 percent on 47 attempts and converted 7-15 three-point shots. The Bruins made 15-22 shots from the free-throw line while the Wildcats made 5-8.
The Bruins took advantage of seven first-quarter turnovers by Linfield to take a 15-12 lead by the end of the period. George Fox and Linfield went back and forth in the second quarter with the Bruins eventually holding a small 30-28 lead at halftime. Yoshitake led all scorers with 14 points while Solt led Linfield with eight points.
Linfield clawed ahead coming out of halftime and outscored George Fox by five in the third quarter, holding a 41-38 advantage going into the final frame. The scoring margin continued to be razor-thin in the fourth quarter. The Bruins outscored the Wildcats 18-13 in the fourth, including making 5-7 free throws in the final minute and a half to secure the win.
