2023-24 Women’s Basketball: Another step forward

Last season, the Wildcats put together their best season in conference play since 2019 going 6-10 and 10-15 overall. Coming into this season ninth-year head coach Casey Bunn-Wilson hopes that can be a step in the right direction for a team that will continue to grow with a young core.

"I really like what I'm seeing," Bunn-Wilson said. "We're deeper at the point guard spot and our transition game has been better. The girls are really fun to be around and everything is off to a good start."

HUNGRY FOR MORE
The Wildcats return their top scorer from last season Gillyan Landis. The junior averaged 10.5 points per game, 6.7 rebounds and shot 49% from the field earning a Northwest Conference Honorable Mention selection.

Landis will be joined in the front court by senior Peyton Bergevin. Bergevin played in all 25 games last season and projects to see her minutes increase from last season's mark of 12. Janessa Yniguez returns for her fifth and final season with the Wildcats and looks to be leaned on as a leader.

"Their leadership is huge on and off the court," Bunn-Wilson said. "Their experience definitely helps and I'm excited about our group."

The sophomore core of Miki Vermeulen, Ella Koebelin, Eve Burke and Laurel Quinn saw a solid amount of playing time in their freshman seasons and are ready to take a step up in the new year.

"They're such a talented class," Bunn-Wilson said. "They came in hungry and in shape. That allows us to be further along than we were last year because they showed up in shape and that means they worked hard over the summer."

A strength for Linfield this season will be positional size and versatility. Junior Anna Dazey played in 18 games last year while sophomores Logan and Jordan Roberts will provide length on the wing.

"It allows us to do a lot of different things offensively," Bunn-Wilson said. "Defensivly we're also going to change some things and having that size just makes us more versatile."

JOINING THE FOLD
Sophomore transfer Amelia Solt transfers in from Carleton College in Minnesota. Solt averaged 11.5 points per game from her guard position and shot over 80% from the free-throw line.

Allison Mead, Madison Barter and Jadyn Harrell are all freshman newcomers for Linfield and will look to compete for playing time.

"All four of them bring something different to the table that we don't already have," Bunn-Wilson said. "Amalia brings a level of toughness having already played a year at this level and she will make us stronger at the point guard position."

COMING UP
Linfield opens the season against two NAIA opponents in Multnomah on Nov. 9 and on the road against Bushnell on Nov. 11. The Wildcats then travel down to Texas to face Austin College and UT Dallas on Nov. 18 and Nov. 19.

"We're looking to play with high intensity," Bunn-Wilson said. "Both Multnomah and Bushnell are probably going to press and be scrappy teams. We have to stay poised under pressure and compete."
