McMINNVILLE, Ore. – As far as season-opening matches go, it doesn't get much better than Thursday afternoon as the Linfield women's soccer team sent in goal after goal in an 11-1 beating of the NAIA's Multnomah University at the Linfield Soccer and Lacrosse Complex.
The Wildcats fired off 26 shots, landing 17 on goal. They limited the Lions to just four total shots in the 10-goal victory. Eight different Linfield players notched goals. The 11 goals surpassed the previous program single-match record of eight, accomplished twice in 2003.
Freshmen
Ruby Lacktrup and
Janae Lewis have already left their marks in their collegiate soccer debuts, scoring two goals apiece. Lacktrup opened the scoring in the 15
th minute off an assist by
Riley Omonaka. She also opened the scoring in the second half with a 48
th-minute strike, assisted once again by Omonaka along with
Makenna Blix.
Lewis scored back-to-back goals in less than two minutes, finding the back of the net in the 37
th and 39
th. Sophomore
Jaeda Doctolero scored the final two goals for the 'Cats despite seeing just 16 minutes of action.
Linfield scored six goals in the first half and five in the second.
Kamahie Samudio,
Laney Green,
Ellie Friedrichsen,
Kami Echiverri and
Callie Kawaguchi were the other goal scorers for the 'Cats.
Omonaka, Blix and
McCall Bennion distributed two assists each. Five others also dished out assists. With an assist in the final seconds of the first half, Lewis finished her first collegiate appearance with a team-leading five points.
Sophomore
Emilee Miller claimed the win in goal, allowing the lone Lion goal but making two saves in just over 68 minutes played.
Erin Isbister entered the match midway through the second half, but her job was easy as her backline didn't allow a single shot on goal.
Mercedes Gomez was the lone goal scorer for Multnomah, tying the match at 1-1 with a strike in the 25
th minute. Allison Buckley played the entire match in goal for the Lions, making six saves.
NEXT
Linfield (1-0-0) will hit the road for Portland on Saturday, playing at Warner Pacific at 4 p.m. The 'Cats will then fly to Chicago for matches against North Central and either Grove City or Centre on Sept. 9-10 in Naperville, Illinois.
