Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Roggenbuck wins it at the buzzer for Wildcats

PORTLAND, Ore. – Dempsey Roggenbuck is that guy.

The senior guard from Marin County, California, hit the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer to lead the Linfield men's basketball team to a 71-68 win over Lewis & Clark Friday night at Pamplin Sports Center.

With the Wildcats up 68-66 with 25 seconds left in the game, Roggenbuck was sent to the free throw line but missed both attempts. A Ryan Cibull layup tied it for Lewis & Clark at 68 apiece with 13 seconds to go. The Pioneer's Jack Henderson then picked up a steal on the following Linfield inbound, but he was unable to cash in the layup to give the Pios the lead. Roggenbuck marched down the court on the next possession to knock down the dagger.

"After Dempsey missed those free throws, it wasn't a surprise he made that game-winner," head coach Shanan Rosenberg said. "He's as determined and relentless of a competitor as you will find."

Roggenbuck dropped a team-high 19 points, connecting on 6 of 19 from the field, 3 of 7 from three-point range and 4 of 6 from the free throw line. He also had seven rebounds, an assist and a steal. Fellow senior guard Max Lommen scored 15 points on 6 of 10 from the field to go with three rebounds, an assist and four steals. Senior forward Aaron Baune finished with 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks while junior guard Carson Bonine had nine points.

"I thought our defense and rebounding won the game tonight," Rosenberg said. "We got some big stops in big moments. Max was terrific defensively."

The Wildcats shot 44.4 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from beyond the arc. They scored 16 points off 13 Lewis & Clark turnovers while outrebounding the Pioneers 32-29. The Pios made 45.6 percent from the field and were hot from outside, connecting on 11 of 25 from deep.

Brenden Patrick dropped a game-high 21 points, making 7 of 9 from the field, 3 of 4 from long range and a perfect 4 of 4 from the charity stripe. He also had four rebounds. Cibull finished with 14 points, five rebounds and five assists while Henderson scored 13 points to go with eight rebounds.

"It was a tough night for us from the field," Rosenberg said. "You have to give Lewis & Clark a ton of credit for that. We did a good job of limiting turnovers and creating more in the second half."

NEXT
Linfield improved to 12-5 overall and 7-2 in Northwest Conference play to come into a tie for second place with Pacific Lutheran. Lewis & Clark fell to 6-11 with a 0-9 NWC mark. The 'Cats will return home to end the week, hosting Puget Sound at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Ted Wilson Gymnasium

UPDATED SPECTATOR POLICY
To ensure that the Linfield Community, i.e. Students, Staff, and Faculty, remain as healthy as possible during the latest surge of COVID cases due primarily to the Omicron Variant in Oregon, Linfield Athletics is adjusting our current athletic contest spectator policy to the following:
  • For the home-based basketball games on January 29, home and visiting student-athletes will be allotted 4 family member spectator tickets; those 4 people will be on a list and must provide proof of vaccination at the door. They will also be expected to sit together at the event. No additional spectators will be allowed entry at this time.  These policies also are applicable to the home swim meet on January 30 except ONLY SENIORS on the Linfield swim team will be allowed to have guests.

  • There will be no admission charge for approved spectators.

  • All participants, coaches, spectators and operations personnel must comply with mask use while inside our facilities (except players or officials during active competition and practice). This means wearing the mask over your mouth & nose at all times.  No exceptions AND non-compliant individuals will be told to leave the venue!

  • Spectators are asked to space themselves throughout the bleachers, as per physical distancing guidelines.

  • There will be no band attendance.

  • Concessions will not be sold until further notice. Food is not allowed in our venues, but non-alcoholic drinks may be consumed during events as long as proper masking is taking place between actively taking a drink.

  • These adjustments are temporary, and we will re-evaluate all protocols regularly.
