Linfield takes two slugfests over Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. – Being down in both games against the Whitworth Pirates on Sunday at Diana Marks Field, the Linfield Wildcats cruised to 8-2 and 14-8 wins in the doubleheader.

The two wins help the Wildcats remain at the top of the Northwest Conference with a record of 17-3, they are now tied with the George Fox Bruins. Linfield is 28-4 overall, while Whitworth is 9-17 overall and falls to 7-7 in the conference.

Linfield's Kamryn Mobley had six hits in the two games and four RBIs. The star of the game for the Pirates was Maddy Thomas, who had three two-run home runs in the two games. Against the Wildcats in eight games this season, she has six home runs.

GAME 1: Linfield 8, Whitworth 2
Kaylie Lowery got on-base to start the game for the Pirates and moved to third with two outs. Thomas hit a home run to center field that scored Lowery and made it 2-0 after the first.

For the Wildcats in the top of the second, Emma Podliska earned a two-out walk and was pinch ran by Serrina Cabral. Abi Proffitt was the next player at-bat and hit an infield single. Kamryn Mobley doubled to right center and scored Cabral, Proffitt was tagged out at home plate to end the inning.

Linfield tied the game in the fifth when Kamryn Mobley came around to score on a fielding error by Whitworth. With two runners on base and just one out, Whitworth coach Bob Castle brought in Kylie Harris to pitch, who got the final two outs of the inning to keep it at 2-2.

In the sixth inning with two outs, Proffitt got on base with a walk and was pinch run by Kira Sneddon. Mobley moved Sneddon to second on an infield single. Jenny Ball pinch hit for Amanda Reser and hit a double to make it 3-2, Chloe McDaniel replaced Ball at second.

Kelsey Wilkinson kept the inning going by a single that plated Mobley. Kamryn Apling followed with a double to center field that scored Wilkinson and McDaniel. Apling came around to score on a double by Katie Phillips.

The Wildcats scored five runs on five hits in the sixth, all coming after two outs were recorded.

Podliska drove in Paul in the seventh to make it 8-2.

Maddy Podnar tossed the complete game, the only blemish against her was the two-run home run by Thomas in the first. In the game, she had four strikeouts and gave up seven hits and three walks. Podnar collected her 12th win of the season.

Mobley went 4 for 4 in the game and had an RBI. Apling went two for 2 for 2 with two doubles, two RBIs and a walk. The Wildcats had 12 hits in game one.

Corinne Vasiloff was the starting pitcher for the Bucs, she gave up just one earned run on four hits, two walks and two strike outs in 4.1 innings of work. Harris got the loss, giving up six earned runs in 2.2 innings.

GAME 2: Linfield 14, Whitworth 8
Thomas hit a two-run home run in game two as well. Heather Menzer followed Thomas and hit a home run to left center.

The Wildcats loaded the bases in the top of the second on three straight singles by Katrina Johns, Proffitt and Reser. Johns and Sneddon, who pinch ran for Proffitt scored on a double down the left field line by Wilkinson, who had six RBIs in the weekend series against the Bucs.

Phillips led off the top of the third with a double, she stole home plate to make it 3-3. Mobley hit a two-run double that scored Ball and Paul and Linfield led 5-3, its first lead of the game.

Johns brought in Mobley on a double. Proffitt blew the game open with a two-run home run to left field. Linfield scored six runs on six hits in the third before an out was recorded.

The Pirates made it 8-6 in the bottom of the third on a three-run home run by Jessica Rusconi.

Linfield responded with three runs in the top of the fourth. Mobley picked up her fourth RBI of the day and Proffitt added two more runs on a base hit. Phillips hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to plate Wilkinson. Apling scored on a groundout by Paul.

Phillips kept the runs going in the seventh as she hit a solo shot. Thomas hit her third home run of the seventh, all three were two-run home runs.

Proffitt and Phillips went 4 for 4 in the game and both had home runs. Proffitt had four RBIs, Phillips had two. Mobley had three RBIs, whole Wilkinson had two.

For the Wildcats, Wilkinson, Phillips, Mobley, Johns and Proffitt had multi-hit games.

Tayah Kelley gave up eight runs in the complete game, but did pick up her 12th win of the season. She had six strikeouts on the afternoon.

The losing pitcher for the Pirates was Drea Schwaier-Wolf, who gave up six earned runs on nine hits. Melanie Laronde came in relief and gave up eight earned runs in five innings.

UP NEXT
The Wildcats are back home next weekend, hosting the Willamette Bearcats on Saturday at 12 noon and Sunday, April 25 at 11 a.m.
