Heringer takes third at NWC Fall Classic

OREGON CITY, Ore. – Carding back-to-back sub-80 rounds, Abigail Heringer recorded the highest individual finish for Linfield at a major conference tournament in 2½ years, taking third overall at the Northwest Conference Fall Classic, which wrapped up Sunday at the Stone Creek Golf Club.

Heringer maintained her hold on third place in the individual results, the best placing for a Wildcat since April of 2011, when current head coach Brynn Hurdus was runner-up at the NWC Championship Tournament.

But a day after recording a season-low team total, Linfield posted one of its highest scores of the fall season, dropping two positions into seventh place at the conclusion of the last tournament of the fall season. Collectively, the Wildcats shot 347-368-715, 101 strokes behind team champion Whitman. Only two clubs shot better on Day 2 than on Day 1, and it was those two teams – Lewis & Clark and Pacific Lutheran – that pulled ahead of Linfield in the team standings.

Heringer, like most golfers, saw her second-round score swell from her first-round total, but still recorded her sixth sub-80 round of the year with a 78. Together with her 74 on Day 1, the freshman shot a cumulative 152, eight strokes over par and six strokes behind medalist Sydney Maluenda of George Fox.

Alexandria Smith and Maggie Harlow finished 22nd and 30th, respectively, for the Wildcats. Smith shot an 82-88-170, 26 strokes over par, while Harlow totaled 185 strokes (89-96).

Laura Waller factored into Linfield's team score on Day 2, carding a 104-106-210 overall for 38th place. Though her individual round scores were off her career-low 101, her total score was 10 strokes better than her previous best two-day round.

By finishing ahead of Pacific and Puget Sound, Linfield earned two points in the NWC team standings, with two major tournaments – the NWC Spring Classic and NWC Championship Tournament – to be played in the spring.

Competition resumes in March.
