McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Linfield women's lacrosse (0-3) fell short in a mid-week non-conference showdown with the Lewis & Clark River Otters (3-0), 18-7.
Â
Lewis & Clark struck first almost three minutes into the Wednesday evening game, clearing the possession after a Linfield missed free position on the first attempt of the game. Linfield's
Apple Riso and
Savannah Irwin continued to apply the pressure after the Otters took a 2-0 lead. Riso put the 'Cats on the board with 8:06 remaining, a man-up score earning
Maizri Chandler the assist.Â
Â
Chandler tied the game shortly after with a free position score. The two teams were knotted for a couple minutes until the River Otters scored twice in the final 2:37, taking a 4-2 advantage into the second quarter.
Â
Lewis & Clark kept the Linfield offense in-check in the second, allowing just four Wildcat shots, three being stopped by the Otter goalkeeper and one missing the target. The Otters piled on seven goals in the second, commanding an 11-2 lead at half.
Â
Following the break, the 'Cats leading scorer,
Gabby Crist, found the back of the net four minutes in the quarter. For most of the third, the score remained 11-3, until Crist scored again with 2:40 left to make it 11-4. Yet again, Lewis & Clark executed two late goals, leading 13-4 with 15 minutes to play.
Â
Linfield earned a free position early in the fourth quarter, taken by
Alexa Brandt, who dished it to
Heidi Schaefer, burying the shot in the net to cut it to 13-5. Lewis & Clark sandwiched five scores in the final minutes between freshman
Apple Riso getting on the stat sheet and Schaefer scoring her second of the quarter.Â
Â
The River Otters took the mid-week contest, 18-7.
Â
Each Crist, Riso and Schaefer tallied two scores a-piece, while Chandler's one goal and one assist earned her two points. The Otters out-shot the 'Cats 29-26, with 22 of which on-target.Â
Â
The 'Cats are back in action this Sunday up in Tacoma, Washington, taking on the Puget Sound Loggers.
