Wildcats stumble in road opener at Whitman, 7-0

WALLA WALLA, Wash. --- Linfield women's tennis (0-5, 0-3 NWC) dropped their first road trip of the early season to the Whitman Blues (2-2, 2-0 NWC), 7-0.
 
DOUBLES
The Blues managed jumped out to a quick lead with a 6-0 win at No. 3 by Julia Longpre and Juliene Thompson over freshman Wildcat duo Lyla Khlee and Steffenie Stark, before Whitman clinched the doubles point at No. 2 as Gloria Lau and Sascha Wells beat Sundi King and Gianna Molony 6-1 to set the team score on the day at 1-0.
 
Doubles concluded with a Whitman sweep thanks to a 6-2 victory in the top flight for Nana Vang and Renata Puga Rosell against Linfield No. 1 duo Kaitlynn Canubida and Samantha Baltz.
 
SINGLES
The Blues extended their lead to 3-0 less than an hour into singles competition, with Lau beating King 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 before Wells handed Baltz her second singles loss of the season after a 3-0 start, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 flight.
 
Whitman clinched victory on the day shortly after at 4-0 with a win by Bailey Bell against Linfield junior Emily Redwood. Bell didn't drop a game in the first set before Redwood responded with an inspired comeback effort in the second, but coming up short as Bell eventually won in straight sets 6-0, 6-4.
 
Sundi King took one game in the first set and two in the second set of No. 4 singles, falling 6-1 and 6-2. Freshman Gianna Molony was unable to take a game in the opening set, but battled hard in set two. Molony's singles run came just short in the second set, 6-3. Whitman's Leah Lovato won the No. 6 singles match in straight sets, 6-0 each. 
 
The Wildcats continue a tough road trip tomorrow morning, taking on the Whitworth Pirates at 11 a.m. in Spokane, Washington.
