SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth's six fourth-quarter goals guided the Pirates to a 15-12 victory over visiting Linfield on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Pine Bowl.
Gabby Crist tallied four goals for the third straight game as
Maya Wright added three assists.
Maizri Chandler was next closest with three goals while
Mackenzie Kulick and Wright added two each. Crist,
Savannah Irwin and
Madison De La Trinidad all caused three turnovers each while the same trio each picked up five ground balls. In goal,
Tenley Hodge totaled 12 saves.
Campbell Vincent paced the Pirates' offense with four goals with teammate Sierra Witte adding three. Kenzie Hemman led Whitworth (9-3, 5-2 NWC) with five ground balls. Sage Fosnock tallied two saves. Whitworth outshot Linfield 36-23, including a 14-3 edge in the final quarter. The Pirates also won 23 of 31 draw controls.
Linfield and Whitworth traded goals through the first half. The Pirates and Wildcats were deadlocked at three each after the first quarter. Linfield and Whitworth again scored three goals apiece as the two sides went into halftime tied at six.
The 'Cats edged the Pirates in the third quarter scoring 4-3 and held a 10-9 lead going into the final frame. Whitworth put together its best offensive stretch, scoring six in the final 15 minutes to stave off Linfield's hopes for a third straight road victory.
