Linfield foursome claims 200 medley relay crown

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – On the strength of a championship result in 200-yard medley relay, the Linfield men staked a firm grip on second place in the team standings after the first day of competition at the Northwest Conference Swimming Championships Thursday at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

Action began with two relays for both men and women on Thursday, kicking off a four-day run to determine the nine NWC schools' respective team and individual champions.

MEN
In the 200 medley relay, Linfield's foursome of Daisuke Fitial, Jake Maher, Edan Donaldson and Garrett Sutton claimed the title in 1 minute, 31.61 seconds, holding off a strong push by Whitworth, which finished second in 1:32.30. The Wildcats shaved more than three seconds off their previous best time. More significantly, Fitial's relay leadoff leg in the backstroke set a new school record. His time of 23.04 broke the record of 23.07 set by graduated All-American Noah Cutting in 2016.

Linfield's 800 medley relay, featuring Sutton, Ben Simpson, Colby Evenson and Cam Wheeler, placed third in a time of 1:47.81. Linfield cut more than 15 seconds off its previous best effort yet had to settle for third place behind champion Whitworth (6:39.93), which established a new conference-meet record, and runner-up Whitman (6:53.28).

In the team standings after Day 1, Whitworth leads with 74 points, followed closely by Linfield with 72 points. Whitman is third with 66 points, followed by Puget Sound (60) and Pacific Lutheran (52).

WOMEN
In a tight race in the 200 freestyle relay, the foursome of Avery Campbell, Whitney Averill, Molly Shields and Maggie Kelley snipped more than four seconds off their season-best time on the way to claiming the third-place medal. The Wildcats clocked 1:47.81, less than two seconds behind Pacific Lutheran, which won the event in 1:45.90. Runner-up Whitworth nabbed second place in 1:46.59.

Linfield swam to a fifth-place result in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:54.79. The quartet included Kalea Mullins, Kate Walkup, Abbi Karsseboom and Claudia Velie registered a nearly 20-second improvement from the squad's previous best time.

With 60 points, the Wildcat women share fourth place with George Fox after the first day of action. Whitworth leads all challengers with 84 points, followed closely by Pacific Lutheran (70), Puget Sound (64) and Whitman (60).

AHEAD
Action resumes Friday morning with preliminary races starting at 9:30 a.m. Finals follow in the evening session, which starts at 5 p.m.
