TACOMA, Wash. – Playing in her final collegiate match,
Jenna Hessel delivered the match-winning goal for the Linfield Wildcats in their 9-8 win at the Puget Sound Loggers on Sunday afternoon at Baker Stadium.
Sunday's match was the season finale for the Wildcats, who finish the Northwest Conference only 2021 season with a record of 7-3. The Loggers are 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
Linfield had the early 2-0 lead on goals from
Bethany Shade and
Josie Duey, both were ruled as unassisted.
The Loggers took the lead on goals from Hayden Hotchkiss, Lauren Mastin and Bee Bridge, respectively. The Wildcats tied it again on a goal by Shade, but the Loggers came right back to make it 4-3 on a goal from Hannah Bushing.
Duey scored her second goal of the match to make it 4-4, but Bushing answered back once again and gave Puget Sound a 5-4 lead at halftime.
This match was quite a contrast from Saturday's 20-6 win for the Wildcats.
Shade scored in the first nine seconds of the second half to make it 5-5, Duey gave Linfield a 6-5 lead, but Bridge tied it at six.
Maia Rezoski scored on an assist from
Bethany Shade to make it 7-6. The Loggers and the 'Cats were tied at 8 with just under nine minutes left.
Linfield took the lead on a goal from
Jenna Hessel at the 4:59 mark on an assist by Shade to give Linfield a 9-8 lead, which it held for its seventh win.
Hessel finishes her career with 95 points which is 10
th in program history, 76 goals, which is ninth and 19 assists, which is 14
th. She started all 41 matches in her career.
Leading the team in points was Shade with six, Duey had three. Rezoski had a goal as did Hessel. Shade claimed four groundballs, Rezoski claimed three,
Elena Kroll and
Epi Roldan-Rayo claimed two each.
Linfield won nine of the 18 draw controls with Shade winning four, Duey winning three and Rezoski winning two.
For the Loggers, Bushing had three goals and an assist, Mastin had two goals and two assists.
Playing her final career match as well, Roldan-Rayo, made five saves. Her Puget Sound counterpart, Olivia Almy made 19 saves.
Roldan-Rayo increased her career saves total to 148, which is sixth in program history, her saves per match average of 3.79 is fourth.
The Wildcats went 13 for 17 in clear attempts, the Loggers went 14 for 20. Linfield had the 30-16 shot advantage.
Sunday's match was also the last for defender
Madison Hicks, who played in 37 matches, totaling 23 groundballs and eight caused turnovers.
