Wildcats set for two key battles against the Bearcats

MATCH PREVIEW

Linfield University men's and women's soccer teams take on the Willamette Bearcats in Salem on Wednesday and at the Linfield Soccer and Lacrosse Complex on Sunday.
 
The women's match kicks off at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday and at noon on Sunday. The men's match follows on both days, tentative start time for Wednesday night is 7 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday.

THE LINFIELD WOMEN
The women suffered their first setback of the season on Sunday at George Fox. Madi Reimer made two saves in the 1-0 loss. The Wildcats are averaging 9.3 shots per match and have allowed just two goals in four matches.
 
Michayla Sponsel, Natalie Amara, Kristen Burke and Jill Leroux have scored the team's four goals. Sponsel is the team leader in shots with seven. Reimer stands second in the conference with one goal allowed and is third in save percentage at .833.
 
The two wome's teams split the two meetings last year with each team successfully defending its home field. Willamette leads the all-time head-to-head series, 32-13-6. The Wildcats are 11-4-5 against the Bearcats since 2010.
 
THE WILDCATS MEN
The Wildcats started the season 0-2-0, but have improved to 2-2-0, splitting the season series against the George Fox Bruins and the Pacific Boxers. Linfield defeated George Fox on a match-winner by Seamus Miller in double overtime on Sunday. It was the first career goal for the freshman from Tacoma, Washington. Wildcats lead the conference with 13.3 shots per match.
 
The Wildcats defeated the Boxers on March 7 by a score of 2-0. Miller, Cesar Cruz-Espindola and Ryan Kister have scored the Wildcats' three goals.
 
Julian Inches played the first three matches as the starting goalkeeper and made six saves, which is ninth in the NWC. Peyton Frazier made his debut on Sunday and stopped three shots.
 
In the final match of the 2019 season, the Wildcats and the Bearcats played to a scoreless draw in front of a packed house in McMinnville. Willamette won the meeting in Salem by a score of 2-1. Linfield leads the all-time series, 27-22-2.
 
THE WILLAMETTE WOMEN
The Bearcats split their season series against the Pacific Boxers, falling in double overtime at home and winning in Forest Grove. Willamette averages nine shots per game.
 
Emma Blackburn ranks second in the conference in scoring with two goals and is fifth in total points with five. The Bearcats have split time in net. Grasiela Quevedo-Ramos has made five saves while Jordan Roue has stopped 10 shots on goal.
 
THE BEARCATS MEN
Willamette is a perfect 3-0-0, scoring nine goals in two matches against Pacific and one against George Fox. The Bearcats have allowed only one goal this spring. 
 
This week's meeting is between the top teams in shots per match in the conference. Willamette is second with an average of 12.7. Ryan Sato has scored six goals, which is fifth in the NWC. He has 18 total points, which is tied for fourth. Like the Willamette women, the men have alternated goalkeepers. Anthony Richard-Bassett has saved four shots. Pierluca Carnovale does not have a save.

The Linfield are men are idle next Wednesday, they take on the Boxers in McMinnville for Senior Day on Sunday, March 28. The women face the Lewis & Clark Pioneers in a home-and-home series. Pios host the 'Cats on Wednesday, March 24 and the Wildcats host their senior day on Sunday, March 28.
