Landis picks up double-double in loss to Trinity

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The freshmen combined for 50 points, but the Linfield women's basketball team fell 92-68 to Trinity (Texas) to open the Ken Schumann Classic Friday afternoon at Pacific University's Stoller Center.
 
Gillyan Landis picked up her first collegiate double-double in the loss, leading the Wildcats with a season-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. The forward made 10 of 23 shots from the field and was a perfect 2 of 2 from the free throw line. Landis has scored in double digits in five of the Wildcats' six games.
 
Forward Elyse Waldal and guard Emma Schmerbach also scored in double digits to cap off a strong performance by the newcomers. Waldal finished with 13 points, five rebounds and two assists, connecting on 5 of 10 from the field and 2 of 4 from three-point range while making her only free throw attempt. Schmerbach had 12 points and five rebounds and led the team with four assists.
 
Trinity opened the game with a 32-9 lead after the first quarter then tacked on 26 more points to go up 58-29 going into halftime. The Wildcats outscored the Tigers 39-34 in the second half, but the damage was already done.
 
The Tigers shot 51.8 percent from the field, 35 percent from long range and 79.4 percent from the free throw line. They scored 42 points in the paint and 30 points off 22 Wildcat turnovers.
 
Four players scored in double digits for Trinity. Ashlyn Milton led the way with 25 points, connecting on 7 of 11 from the field, 5 of 8 from deep and 6 of 6 from the charity stripe. Maggie Shipley was right behind Milton with 23 points to go with three rebounds, two assists and two steals. She made 10 of her 13 shots. Carly Leong finished with 13 points while Kelly Simmons had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists.

Linfield (0-6) will be in Forest Grove again on Saturday, playing Colorado College at 2 p.m. Northwest Conference play opens at Puget Sound on Dec. 3.
