Basketball Preview vs. Whitworth

Wildcats, Pirates battle Saturday as NWC reaches halfway point

GAME PREVIEW

01/20

WOMEN
WHITWORTH (6-10, 1-6 NWC) VS. LINFIELD (7-9, 3-4 NWC)
TIPOFF AT 4 P.M.

Linfield sets its sights on keeping Whitworth winless in January on Saturday night in McMinnville.

In the midst of their only home-and-home weekend of the season, the Wildcats face a struggling Pirates team that is riding a seven-game losing streak.

The Pirates have just one win in NWC play, that coming December 2 in Tacoma against Pacific Lutheran. Linfield wants keep pace in the NWC playoff race, sitting a game behind Lewis & Clark for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Grace Douglass, Camy Aguinaldo and Madison Moffat carry the Pirates offensively. All three are averaging more than 12 points per night. Defensively, Whitworth allows 73 points per game, the most by any team in the conference.

The second-most efficient shooting team in the NWC at 44 percent, Linfield needs to get its usual share of shot attempts from Molly Danielson and Kory Oleson. The 'Cats showed great ability to break the Loggers' press a weekend ago. Limiting turnovers is key in order for the 'Cats to claim a victory.

Fans are encouraged to arrive at Wilson Gym early and bring spare change to help support local charities. Linfield is donating 25 percent of all ticket sales, as well as all donated funds from fans, to three McMinnville worthy organizations.

Fans are invited to wear their favorite jersey from any sport. Scott Brosius' Yankees or Steph Curry's Warriors. Don your best sports threads and head to the game Saturday night 4 p.m. at Ted Wilson Gym.

MEN
WHITWORTH (14-2, 6-1 NWC) VS. LINFIELD (11-4, 5-2 NWC)
TIPOFF AT 6 P.M.

A rematch of last year's Northwest Conference semifinal playoff game, Linfield seeks revenge against the visiting Pirates from Spokane.

Heading into tonight's matchup, Linfield sits in third place in the NWC standings; Whitworth is second. Whitworth's lone conference defeat came against Whitman last week while the Wildcats only blemish came in December to Pacific.

Whitworth is ranked seventh in the most recent D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.

Pirates Kyle Roach and Ben College lead the club in scoring. Transfer Jared Christy has made a name for himself in his first season at Whitworth, adding 11 points and nearly 10 rebounds a game.

Poised offensively, Linfield is unpredictable in its approach. Six Wildcats average more than eight points per game, making it tough for opponents to game plan against one or two players. Expect the 'Cats to rely on their defense and crafty scoring in front of what is expected to be a near capacity crowd.

Following tonight's action, Linfield will have reached the halfway point of the conference season.

Fans are invited to wear their favorite jersey from any sport for "Jersey Night" Saturday night 6 p.m. at the Ted Wilson Gym.
