McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Linfield's
Sydney Kuehn scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to hand the Linfield Wildcats a hard-fought 2-1 Northwest Conference win over the George Fox Bruins on Senior Day at the Linfield Soccer Field.
Pivotal Point
With a little more than three minutes played in the second overtime, Kuehn latched onto a
Michayla Sponsel pass and slotted a one-on-one shot past sliding Bruins goalkeeper Kelsey Kammerzell, igniting an on-field celebration.
1st Half
The opening period saw a defensive struggle for 44 minutes. Prior to the final minute of the half, the two teams managed a combined five shots between them.
Presented a golden opportunity late, Linfield took full advantage. Wildcats' substitute
Carole Thomas found open space with 27 seconds left and fired a far-post effort toward the Bruins' net.
Kammerzell kept the initial attempt out of the goal, but re-directed the effort to a wide-open
Kristen Burke, who netted her fourth goal of the season.
2nd Half
In a what was a quiet second half by both teams, Wildcats' goalkeeper
Madi Reimer kept a couple of free-kick efforts out to preserve Linfield's 1-0 lead with 20 minutes remaining.
George Fox midfielder Kylie Louis netted the equalizer five minutes before the end of regulation. After Emma Laurion's corner kick was cleared from the box, Louis picked up the ball 20 yards from goal and guided a perfect shot to the left corner of the Linfield frame, leaving Reimer no chance of a save.
Leading Wildcats
In an almost statistically even match, Kuehn led all Wildcats with three shots. Thomas,
Taylor Cole and
Desirae DesRosiers each produced two shots off the bench. Reimer totaled four saves against 11 shots.
Top Bruins
Leanna Harris led George Fox with a team-high three shots, two of which were on goal. Kammerzell ended the afternoon with three saves against five shots on target.
What It Means
The win sent four Linfield's seniors –
Shelby DeRocher,
Kyla Alvarenga,
Colette Sims and
Emily Schump – away on a high note. The four veterans were playing their final home game in purple and cardinal.
Linfield vaulted George Fox for fifth place in the NWC standings with a 6-6-1 conference record (8-8-1 overall). The Bruins dipped to 5-6-2.
