NEWBERG, Ore. –
Beckham Poirot delivered the game-winning goal in the second half as Linfield men's soccer (3-3-2, 2-1-1 NWC) earned a 2-0 Northwest Conference victory over George Fox (1-5-1, 1-3-1 NWC) on Sunday; their second shutout win of the weekend.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when
Anderson Kelly found the net for his second goal of the season off an assist from
Caleb Ishizaka. Linfield carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime after generating nine shots in the opening 45 minutes.
Ishizaka once again assisted the first goal of the day, similarly to Saturday's 2-0 win over Lewis & Clark.
George Fox pulled even in the 60th minute, but Linfield responded just under 11 minutes later.
Johann Singh Sanchez set up Poirot for his second goal of the season, also second of the weekend, in the 71st minute, putting the Wildcats back in front 2-1.
Linfield finished with a 21-15 advantage in shots and put five attempts on goal.
Brody Dalgaard led the Wildcats with four shots, while Poirot, Ishizaka and Aaron Nowack each recorded three. Poirot put two of his three attempts on target.
Colby Reese played all 90 minutes in goal and made four saves, including all four in the opening half, notching a second consecutive shutout. The Wildcats held George Fox scoreless over the final 30 minutes to secure the victory.
The Wildcats were issued three cautions in the match, one each to
Matthew Cole,
Oli Gaines, and
Rylan Richter. The Bruins earned two cautions and a disqualifying red card late in the match.
Men's soccer brings a two-match win streak into Homecoming next weekend, serving host to the Puget Sound Loggers on Saturday and the Pacific Lutheran Lutes on Sunday, both matches set to kick off at 12 p.m.
