Fia Swanson and
Lize Rendon each scored in the second half as Linfield women's soccer (3-3-1, 1-2-0 NWC) secured a 2-0 victory over Lewis & Clark (2-4-2, 2-3-0 NWC). The defense allowed just six shots, earning goalkeeper
Maddie Funk her third shutout of the season.
The Wildcats generated several opportunities during a scoreless opening half, putting three of their four shots on goal. Linfield increased the pressure after halftime, recording eight shots and five corner kicks over the final 45 minutes.
Swanson broke the scoreless tie in the 60th minute, finding the net for her first goal of the season to put the Wildcats ahead 1-0. Rendon provided insurance in the 85th minute after the Otters goalkeeper's misplay; scoring her first goal of the season to extend the Linfield advantage to two. Linfield doubled their total goals for the season in their first conference match at home.
Linfield finished with a 12-6 advantage in shots and put eight attempts on goal while limiting Lewis & Clark to just one shot on target. Rendon led the Wildcats with three shots, while Swanson and
Sydney Garner each recorded two.
Lena Caballero Uhtoff,
McKenzie Heckman,
Amalia Tufts,
Ava Vargas and
Amalie Anderson also put shots on goal.
Maddie Funk and the Linfield defense kept Lewis & Clark off the scoreboard throughout the match. Funk made one save to complete the shutout, her third in as many games played this season; she ranks No. 2 in the conference in shutouts and leads in goals against average.
The 'Cats aim to bring Saturday's offense to Newberg tomorrow afternoon, taking on the George Fox Bruins at 2:45 p.m.
