INTRODUCTION
As the 2025 season dawns, the Linfield baseball team is set to make significant strides under the leadership of head coach
Dan Spencer who enters his sixth season at the helm. Coming off a challenging 2024 campaign, the Wildcats are determined to throw their hat into the ring of teams vying for a Northwest Conference title. With a blend of experienced returners and promising newcomers, Linfield is poised to contend in the NWC. Spencer emphasized in his preseason interview that consistent defense, pitching depth, and stronger offensive execution are key areas of focus this season.
Â
IMPACT RETURNERS
Several standout performers from the 2024 season return to anchor the lineup.
Elijah Maris, who led the team with an impressive .386 batting average, will continue to be a critical offensive contributor.
Matthew Lewis also returns after a solid campaign, batting .250 with a home run and flawless defensive play in the outfield.
Nick Holm finished last season with an All-NWC second team selection and is sure to be an impact player for the Wildcats. Linfield will look to the junior for leadership both on the field and in the dugout.
Â
Tyler Marr makes his return behind the plate and is ready for another big season after being selected to the All-NWC second team in 2024.
Â
"Marr is the best catcher in the conference," said Spencer. "We're trying to figure who to back him up with… We've also tried to be good defensively with the understanding that it protects your pitching."
Â
On the pitching front,
Jake Swenson, the reigning NWC Rookie of the Year award winner, has big expectations ahead of the 2025 season. The sophomore looks to come in and make his presence felt on the mound alongside
Camden Oram and
Zach Johnson who both expect to see high usage this year. Spencer feels that pitching is a strength for the Wildcats this season:
Â
"We feel like we don't go 1,2,3 with the pitchers," said Spencer. "We feel we can go 1,1 and 1 on the mound.
Â
In the outfield, Hunter Kilngelhoffer comes back for his senior year and looks to build off of his impressive .969 fielding percentage and All-NWC honorable mention in 2024.
Â
NEWCOMERS TO WATCH
Among Linfield's strong core of returners stand a host of newcomers that look to make an immediate impact for the Wildcats.
Tyler Eisenhut joins the infield after spending his freshman season at Mount Hood Community College where he recorded a .306 batting average.
Â
Josh Mansur also comes over from Mount Hood Community College. The junior comes alongside
Wyatt McClory, a freshman from Carlsbad, California, who is hungry to be a difference-maker.
Â
"We have a really good, young infielder in
Wyatt McClory," said Spencer. "He's a really good player, so there's a lot of competition."
Â
High-level competition bodes well for the Wildcats who will look to their depth for relief as the season progresses.
Â
PITCHING AND DEFENSIVE DEPTH
Spencer highlighted pitching depth as a major improvement area. With the return of several experienced arms, Linfield's bullpen looks stronger than ever. Expect
Jackson Koons,
Gavin Ludlow and
Zack Hampson to throw meaningful pitches for Linfield as the depth of the bullpen appears to be a major strength for the team.
Â
"Championships are won with how good you are on the mound," said Spencer. "If you look at the conference standings at the end of the year and the four teams playing the conference tournament, they are the four teams that had the best pitching."
Â
Brian Mannion,
Colton Ouellette and
Cooper Justice should see time on the mound as the season progresses as well. Justice joins the team as a senior transfer while Ouellette is a freshman from Reno, Nevada.
Â
Defensively, the Wildcats excelled with a .972 team fielding percentage in 2024, good for 18th best nationally, demonstrating the team's dedication to performing well on the defensive side. The coaching staff expects these defensive strengths to complement improved pitching performances.
Â
SEASON SCHEDULE HIGHLIGHTS
Linfield's schedule features key early matchups at home to open the season against Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound, setting the tone for the season. The Tucson Invitational Games in March will test the Wildcats against national competition, providing valuable experience and résumé-building opportunities against division three competition before returning for conference play
Â
In his preseason remarks, Coach Spencer expressed confidence in his squad's ability to compete at a higher level. Emphasizing disciplined at-bats, aggressive baserunning, and dominant pitching, the coaching staff believes this year's team has the tools to make some noise in a wide-open NWC.
Â
CONCLUSION
With a retooled roster, seasoned leadership, and a clear vision from Coach Spencer, the 2025 Linfield Wildcats baseball team is ready to take on the challenges of the new season. If the Wildcats can maintain defensive consistency and unlock their offensive potential, a return to prominence in the Northwest Conference is well within reach.
