NEWBERG, Ore. – Linfield women's tennis continued its season-opening road swing on Saturday with a loss at cross-county rival George Fox.
The match marked the third of five straight on the road to open the spring slate for the Wildcats (0-3, 0-2). It served as the Northwest Conference opener for the host Bruins (2-0, 1-0).
DOUBLES
George Fox was able to handily claim the lone team point up for grabs in doubles play.
In the top doubles flight the Bruins' Riley Bobkiewicz and Kalli Wiker beat Linfield's No. 1 team of Kaitlyn Canubida and
Emily Redwood 6-2, while Sophie Denham and Cassey Hitch clinched the day's doubles point with a 6-1 win over
Sam Baltz and
Sundi King.
George Fox completed the doubles sweep with a shutout win for Shanah Denham and Arianna Rader over
Lilianna Cano and
Elise Reese.
SINGLES
The Bruins carried their strong doubles play into singles to eventually sweep the day.
The Wildcats found themselves without their top active player halfway through her second set when Canubida was forced to retire in the No. 1 singles match against Wiker.
At No. 2 singles Baltz fell to Bobkiewicz 6-0, 6-1 while Redwood lost to Denham 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3.
Linfield was blanked by the Bruins in the remaining three flights.
NEXT
Linfield plays two more matches on the road next weekend, visiting the Lewis & Clark Pioneers (1-3, 0-0) in Portland on Saturday, Feb. 22 before heading up to Tacoma to face the Puget Sound Loggers (1-1, 1-0) on Feb. 23.
The Wildcats will host the Whitworth Pirates for the Linfield home-opener on March 1.
