Men's hoops prepares to tip-off 2025-26 season

By Chase Fisk, Director of Athletic Communications

A new era begins for the Linfield Wildcats and a brand-new coaching staff in the 2025-26 men's basketball season. A new regime, culture, and foundation built on success led by first-year head coach Elijah Gurash, who embraces a “one day at a time” mentality.

The program has seen consecutive eighth-place finishes in the Northwest Conference the past two seasons, and were picked to finish there yet again in the 2025-26 NWC Preseason Coaches Poll. Gurash and fellow first-year assistant coaches Jesse Bender and Matt Gehrke aim to rise to the top of the conference standings where the team earned the top-two seeds in back-to-back seasons in 2019-20 and 2021-22. Along with a new staff, the Wildcat's roster features five returning seniors and a group of eight freshman student-athletes.

“Our goal is to get better each day. We have to learn from the adversities we face, and we go back to the drawing board after each practice, game, film session, to understand what we did well and what we didn't do so well. The focus is very much on the day-to-day preparation.”

Departing the team from a season ago, most notably, Cade Collins who led the team in scoring and minutes played. Collins was one of the top free throw shooters in the conference, which helped him earn All-NWC Honorable Mention, the lone Wildcat to earn all-conference honors last season. Seniors Josh Ryan and Cayden Lowenbach's careers came to an end in 2024-25, leaving behind a team-high in total assists (Ryan) and rebounds per game (Lowenbach). Last season began with a 1-6 record through the first seven games, later turning the ship around to begin NWC play. But an eight-game skid to end the season saw four single-digit losses, cutting the season short. Linfield shoots to make the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in a quarter-century.

Senior Guard #3 Dayton Magana

The Modesto, California, native transferred to Linfield a season ago from Delta Junior College. Magana was a key piece of the offense last season, averaging 8.4 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. He led the team from beyond the arc, sinking 37 three-pointers, while also showcasing his defense with a team-high 23 steals in 25 games played, making 10 starts. Dayton headlines a senior class that Gurash looks to lean heavily on in helping the growth of a large freshman class on a team in its first year together.

Junior Garrett Callsen, a 6'7 junior form Stayton, Oregon, enters his third season in the purple and cardinal, having played in every game in his first two seasons on the team. Callsen shot a team best 59% from the field last season, swatting a team-high 17 blocks down low. In his sophomore season, he averaged 7.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.

“Garrett is a super solid player. I'm excited to coach him.” said Gurash. “I think he has some good versatility at the five-spot, he's a very tough and coachable player for us.”

Sophomore Guard #2 Max Juhala

From West Linn, Oregon, sophomore Max Juhala returns after a standout freshman campaign, competing in 22 games and earning 16 starts; averaging 7.5 points and three rebounds per game last season. The management major shot 57% from the field and 44% from beyond the arc, looking to have a prominent role in the 'Cats offense once again this season.

“Max aims to have a much bigger role than he had as a freshman. He's extremely versatile, and we need to take advantage of that this season.” said head coach Elijah Gurash.

Our four seniors I believe will play strong roles in leading this team. They will fill some roles and help us in one capacity or another. They've been very accepting of the change, and accepting of new things we've inputted. They have the experience to grasp these new concepts quickly and turn that into being great leaders for the young guys.
Elijah Gurash

Eight freshmen are set to make their collegiate debuts this season: Nalu Vargas, Peyton Reyes, Rico George, Lane Garrison, Kohsule Fujiwara. Kris Jakstas, Jackson Bluhm, and Cameron Cox. Half of which are natives of Oregon, while Fujiwara and Jakstas come to McMinnville internationally from Japan and Lithuania.

Nalu and Kohsuke look ready to fill solid roles for us right away. The freshman class will have a lot of growth ahead of them, in regards to adapting to the pace, size, and strength of college basketball that they will be going up against. Our freshman class is showing a lot of promise.

Northwest Conference play begins at the turn of the calendar, with Linfield seeing a three-game homestead against Whitman, Whitworth, and Willamette for three games in five days. Four of the final five regular-season contests are also inside Ted Wilson Gymnasium, hosting Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, and Lewis & Clark before heading just outside of town to close out the season at George Fox. Linfield sets its sights on returning to the NWC Tournament for the first time in four seasons, starting on February 27th where the host will be the regular season conference champion institution.

Our goal is to go out and win every game on the schedule. In order to do that, we will have to play and execute at a high level. There's a lot of learning that goes into everyone in this program being new, together, it will take time.
