Sea Lions shut out 'Cats in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Linfield women's tennis was shut out 7-0 Thursday afternoon at the PLNU Tennis Courts by Division-II Point Loma Nazarene.
 
It was the first ever meeting between the Wildcats (2-8, 1-3) and the Sea Lions. A member of the Pacific West Conference, Point Loma (12-2, 0-0) entered the weekend ranked as the No. 21 team in D-II by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
 
DOUBLES
Point Loma quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead by sweeping doubles play.
 
Playing by D-II rules, the Sea Lions earned one point for taking at least two out of three doubles flights.
 
At No. 1 singles, Point Loma's Thelma Sepulvelda and Arianna Audelo beat Sarah Forester and Emma Tuttle 6-3, while Amanda Letzring and Quin Brady beat Alexis Garner and Kaitlynn Canubida 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
 
The Sea Lions completed the doubles sweep with Anna Pallencaoe and Jazlyn Miyamura blanking Samantha Baltz and Lisa Ponti 6-0.
 
SINGLES
Point Loma quickly added to its 1-0 lead when Quin Brady led off singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Canubida at No. 3 singles while Emely Valencia beat Baltz 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
 
The Sea Lions clinched the win at 4-0 in the No. 6 spot on the ladder when Melissa Zirkle dismissed Ponti 6-2, 6-1.
 
At No. 1 singles Letzring topped Forester 6-2, 6-1 while Tuttle fell at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1 to Audelo.
 
Point Loma clinched the sweep with a win by Pallaencoe over Garner at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
 
NEXT
Linfield returns home to Oregon Friday before resuming Northwest Conference play when they host the Puget Sound Loggers (2-7, 1-2) on Easter Sunday, March 31 at 10:00.
The Wildcats will hold their final home match of the year April 6 against Pacific, before wrapping up the regular season April 13 in Portland at Lewis & Clark.
