Myre's 16 kills and nine digs carry 'Cats past Pioneers

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Powered by 16 kills, nine digs and four services aces from Nora Myre, the Linfield Wildcats defeated the Lewis & Clark Pioneers in four sets Wednesday night at Ted Wilson Gymnasium.
 
The scores were 25-18, 23-25, 25-17 and 25-22. Linfield improved to 6-15 overall and 3-12 in the Northwest Conference. Lewis & Clark remained in search of its first win, falling to 0-19 and 0-12 in conference play.
 
Fueled by three kills by Journey DePonte, Linfield bolt out leads of 7-2 and 12-4 in the opening set. The 'Cats went on to the seven-point win. Myre finished with four kills on four total attacks in the set, giving the Wildcats early momentum. Linfield hit .250 in the frame compared with Lewis & Clark's .042.
 
The second set was much tighter with the Pioneers staking an 11-8 advantage midway through. Trailing by four, 20-16, the Wildcats surged to knot the match at 20 moments later. L&C pulled away in the closing points to take Set 2 by the narrowest of margins, 25-23. Kaitlyn Hough pounded five kills in the set to pace Linfield while Annika Traxler accounted for six kills to lead the Pioneers.
 
Linfield found its game again in Set 3, racing out to a 15-4 lead. The margin grew to 22-9 before the Pioneers trimmed it to single digits, 22-13. But the 'Cats held on to win 25-17 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Myre knocked down three kills and Madison Millard had two to power Linfield to the third-set victory.
 
Surging to an 11-6 lead to open Set 4, the 'Cats asserted command. The Pioneers kept it close, pulling to within two points, 24-22. But Myre provided the final kill to finish off the set and the match, 25-22.
 
Though Linfield piled up 18 service aces, including a match-high six aces by Pi'ilani Hirahara, the Wildcats also accounted for 16 service errors on the night. Linfield hit .258 to Lewis & Clark's .149.
 
Hirahara total 17 assists and four digs. Kanoe Contreras passed out eight assists while Margaritah Banuelos adds seven assists and seven digs. Araeya Watanabe contributed a team-high 15 digs to go along with six kills and four aces.
 
Traxler led the Pioneers with a team-best 16 kills on 41 total attacks. She added 10 digs, five aces and one block assist.
 
NEXT
The Wildcats are idle Friday and Saturday and are set to return to action at 7 p.m. on Nov. 8 at George Fox. The season will conclude with Senior Night on Saturday, Nov. 9, when Linfield will pay tribute to graduating seniors Paige Richardson and Marina Erosa. Match time is set for 6 p.m. at Ted Wilson Gymnasium.
