Wildcats place four on CSC Academic All-District Team

One of the top teams in Division III put in the work in the classroom as well as four Linfield players were selected to the 2023 Academic All-District Softball Team, released Tuesday by the College Sports Communicators.

Graduate student Baily Paul (sport management), junior Tyler Warden (sport management) and sophomores Brynn Nelson (mathematics) and Kaili Saathoff (mathematics) were among 20 student-athletes from the Northwest Conference who earned Academic All-District nods. Pacific Lutheran and Whitworth led the conference with five honorees apiece while Willamette matched Linfield's four. Puget Sound rounded out the league with two selections.

A CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 selection in 2022, Paul returned for an extra year of eligibility with the Wildcats. She has started in all 45 games in right field, collecting 49 hits, 51 runs and 28 RBI. Paul is 31 for 33 on stolen base attempts.

Saathoff and Nelson emerged as key factors as freshmen last season and have only gotten better in 2023. Saathoff ranks seventh in the nation with 68 hits to go with 60 runs and 33 RBI. She leads all qualified Wildcats with a .450 batting average and a .522 on-base percentage. Nelson is slugging .603 with 33 RBI and 53 hits, including 14 doubles and six home runs.

Linfield's No. 2 pitcher, Warden appeared in 19 games, starting in 17. She's 12-1 with a 3.50 ERA, holding opposing lineups to a .296 batting average. Warden has struck out 42 batters. Her season high was five Ks, recorded twice.

Ranked No. 4 in the latest NFCA Division III Top 25, Linfield (41-4, 27-1 NWC) will host SCIAC champion Redlands in a two-team, best-of-five regional tournament May 18-20 at Del Smith Stadium in McMinnville. The 'Cats enter the NCAA playoffs for the 18th time in the last 19 seasons after completing the program's fifth 40-win season and first since 2012.

The CSC Academic All-District Softball Teams recognize the top student-athletes for their combined success in athletics and academics. Linfield's four selections will advance for consideration on the Academic All-America Teams, which will be announced June 6.
