Another week of sports went by, and Linfield earned two more Northwest Conference Student-Athletes of the Week in
Lexie Matsunaga and
Katie Phillips.
Â
Matsunaga picked up her third career NWC Women's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week award and the fourth for the Wildcats this season. The senior led Linfield to a 5-4 non-conference win over Colorado College at home on Sunday. She won No. 2 singles, 7-5, 7-6, thanks to a 7-4 tiebreaker. Matsunaga and teammate
Allena Wong took their No. 1 doubles match by a score of 8-6. The Aiea, Hawaii, native is 5-2 on the year as the Wildcats' No. 2 option at singles.
Â
The 2022 NWC Player of the Year and a staple in the Linfield lineup since she was a freshman in 2019, Phillips reeled in her first career NWC Softball Position Student-Athlete of the Week award. She's the first position player to receive the honor for the 'Cats in 2023.
Â
Phillips batted .438 in Linfield's four-game NWC sweep of Willamette in Salem. The First Team All-American went 7 for 16 in the series with six runs scored and 11 RBI. She notched multiple hits in two of the games, led by a 3-for-5 performance in a six-inning, 13-1 win in Game 2. The graduate student left fielder from Tustin, California, drove in two or more runs in all four games. In Game 3, Phillips went 2 for 4 with a pair of two-run bombs, her first of the year. It was the third two-homer game of her Linfield career.
Â
Linfield women's tennis will be on the road on Sunday to take on Puget Sound in Tacoma. Saturday's match at Pacific Lutheran was canceled as the Lutes have canceled competitions for the remainder of the season and will discontinue both tennis programs beginning in 2023-24.
Â
Linfield softball opens an eight-game homestand with six games this week. The 'Cats will host a doubleheader with third-place George Fox on Wednesday before welcoming second-place and No. 25 Pacific Lutheran to town for a four-game affair on Saturday and Sunday at Del Smith Stadium. The Bruins will be back in McMinnville on Wednesday, April 5, for another doubleheader as part of schedule changes that occurred because of multiple postponements across the NWC earlier in the spring.
