GENEVA, Ohio – Career-best performances in the 100- and 400-meter dashes on Thursday positioned Linfield University graduate student
Keaton Wood for a run at a national men's decathlon championship when action resumes Friday at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships.
Â
The 10-event competition reached its halfway point late Thursday with Wood turning in the day's fastest time in the 400 with a career-best effort of 48.75 seconds. The fifth-year Wildcat from Lake Oswego began the day with a runner-up performance in the 100 at 10.83 seconds, also a personal best.
Â
After five events, Wood sits in fourth place with 3,837 points. In a field of 20 competitors, he trails only first-day leader Marcus Weaver of UW-Eau Claire (3,933 points), Maguire Petersen of St. John's (3,852), and Stephen Peper of St. Olaf (3,848).
Â
Friday's five events begin with Wood's best event, the 110 hurdles.
Â
In other action on Thursday, Linfield senior
Matt Metcalf, fell short in his push to repeat as an NCAA All-American in the men's javelin. Metcalf's best effort came on his second throw, a heave that measured 183 feet, 4 inches. That mark, however, was short of Metcalf's season-best mark of 192-7.
Â
Friday at 8:30 a.m. PDT, Linfield's
Jerrica Pachl is scheduled to compete in the women's high jump. Her entry mark of 5-7 stands in a six-way tie for the sixth-best mark in Division III this spring.
