MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Linfield men's tennis team fell 9-0 to the Whitworth Pirates on Sunday in the final match of the season.
The loss sets the Wildcats' final record on the year at 3-12 overall, 1-7 in conference play and 3-4 in McMinnville.
The Pirates improved to 3-14 overall and 3-3 in the Northwest Conference with two matches left to play.
DOUBLES
The No. 1 flight saw
Rogue Stone and
Matous Young fall to Whitworth's Ethan Violette and Nathan Tjelle 8-4 while
Isaac Milner and
Seamus Miller lost to Jonathon Hutley and Ethan Warring in the No. 2 flight, 8-3.
The Pirates moved to 3-0 in the match when Payton Romey and Cameron Brewer beat
Abraham Solomon and
Alexandre Collard 8-5 in the third flight with Linfield's No. 3 duo being paired together for the first time this year.
SINGLES
Stone nearly won his fifth singles flight of the year, playing the entire season as Linfield's No. 1 seed, in a gritty, well-fought contest with Violette but eventually fell 7-6, 3-6, 11-9.
Hutley was able to handle Young in the No. 2, winning 6-4, 6-1 to clinch the match for Whitworth with the score at 5-0 on the day.
Milner fell in the No. 3 flight 6-3, 6-2 to Warring and Collard fell to Romey in the fourth flight 6-2, 6-4.
The No. 5 flight featured Solomon against Tjelle with Tjelle winning 6-0, 6-3, and Whitworth completed the shutout in the sixth with Brewer holding off Miller to win 5-7, 6-1, 10-4, setting the final at 9-0, Pirates.
