Piedmont deals Linfield second loss; late game suspended

TUCSON, Ariz. – It was an atypical day for the Linfield Wildcats at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Saturday.

For the second consecutive game, Linfield surrendered a lead and lost to an unranked team. And as the Wildcats attempted to turn things around late Saturday, their second game was suspended by a neighborhood light curfew at the field.

Linfield (11-2) resumes its game with the College of St. Benedict on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. The Wildcats lead 3-0 with two outs in the top of the sixth inning and a CSB runner on base.

Piedmont 10, Linfield 6
The Wildcats scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning but the Lions answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Linfield pulled to within two runs, 6-4, scoring a pair of unearned runs.

A home run by Piedmont's Davis in the third put the Lions in front 7-4 but again the Wildcats pushed across two runs in the fourth and fifth innings following RBI from Jocie Newton and Abi Proffit.

Within striking distance in the late going, trailing 7-6, Linfield surrendered three runs in the fifth.

Kelsey Wilkinson drilled a double and a triple and scored a pair of runs. Proffitt and Chelsea Horita also tapped a pair of base hits, part of a nine-hit effort by the 'Cats.

Linfield starter Tayah Kelley absorbed the loss to fall to 2-1. She allowed five hits, four walks and seven runs over the opening two innings before giving way to Jordan Bennett.

Linfield 3, College of St. Benedict 0, top of 6th inning
Game suspended by light curfew, will resume Sunday at 8 a.m.

The Wildcats plated single runs in the first, second and third innings to open up a 3-0 advantage.

Maddy Podnar yielded six walks and four hits yet she stranded eight St. Benedict base runners to hold the Bennies without a run through five innings.
