Linfield swamps Lewis & Clark in dual meet sweep

PORTLAND, Ore. – Led by strong individual performances from Molli Hartzell and Matt Lemire, Linfield swept both sides of a Northwest Conference dual meet Friday night at Zehntbauer Pavillion. The Wildcats topped the Lewis & Clark women's and men's squads by identical 138-67 scores.

Linfield won all four relays and prevailed in 16 of 18 individual events to triumph in resounding fashion.

"The best thing was seeing that the last few weeks of hard training has paid off," said Wildcats coach Kyle Kimball in summing up his team's performance. "I'm happy with our fitness level at this point of the season. We are training tough and the team is definitely tired. In a few weeks, we'll taper and be ready for the conference championships."

WOMEN
Hartzell, from McMinnville, paced Linfield with victories in the 200 individual medley (2:17.69) and the 200 backstroke (2:15.04). The Wildcats senior also swam the leadoff leg on the winning 400 medley relay (4:14.25), teaming with Alexis Murphy, Emily Samudio and Lottie Steward for a winning time in the first race of the night.

In other events, Molly Shields raced to a half-second victory in the 50 freestyle (25.92), edging Murphy (26.46) for first place. Freshman Claudia Velie won the 200 breaststroke by the narrowest of margins – 1/100th of a second – edging L&C's Alys Chang, 2:35.77 to 2:35.78.

Samudio nipped teammate Kate Walkup for the top spot in the 200 butterfly, 2:16.88 to 2:17.01. Anne Walkup was third in 2:22.46. Kate Walkup earned a sizable win in the 1,000 freestyle (11:23.60), well in front of the Pioneers' Kiana Teh (11:47.02).

Steward captured top honors in the 100 freestyle (56.95) while Shields was close behind in second place (57.59).

Shields, Murphy, Velie and Lauren Morrison teamed up for a three-second victory in the 400 freestyle relay (3:52.80).

L&C's Sabrina Murray won both the women's 200 freestyle (2:03.03) and the 500 freestyle (5:30.22) to secure the Pioneers' lone individual event victories.
