Last-ditch falls short for the Wildcats

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – With less than two seconds left in the game, the Linfield Wildcats had their last chance to tie the game at two against the Puget Sound Loggers, that shot hit the post and the Loggers held on to win 2-1 on a windy Saturday afternoon.
 
Puget Sound remains undefeated in Northwest Conference play at 3-0, Linfield falls to 1-2 and will host Lewis & Clark on Sunday, who is 2-1.
 
The Loggers had the first scoring opportunity of the game, but the shot was saved by an acrobatic effort from Madi Reimer.
 
The Wildcats started the scoring early with a goal by Sydney Kuehn on an assist by Kristen burke less than nine minutes into the game. This was the fifth goal of the season for Kuehn.
 
Linfield was able to maintain its lead going into halftime, but Puget Sound had plenty of opportunities to score in the first period.
 
The Loggers were finally able to get a ball past Reimer early in the second half as Reimer made the first save, but could not save the rebound.
 
In the second half, the Wildcats were not able to get the ball into Logger territory and the pressure by the Loggers capitalized in the 67th minute when they took the lead on a header off a corner.
 
Linfield kept trying to put pressure on the Puget Sound defense in the final minutes and the best scoring opportunity came with less than two seconds left on the clock.
 
With the ball in the right corner, Madison Topaum tried the last-ditch effort for the Wildcats, her shots went off the goal post as time expired.
 
The Wildcats have now lost two straight in conference and four of their last five overall.
 
Puget Sound outshot the Wildcats, 15-12, but the Wildcats had more corner kicks, 7-5.
 
Both goalies, Puget Sound's Chaylea Tome and Linfield's Reimer had four saves each.
 
Puget Sound now leads the all-time head to head 40-5-5, including being unbeaten in the last four matchups.
 
UP NEXT
Linfield welcomes Lewis & Clark to McMinnville on Sunday at noon, that game is part of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team taking on Pacific at the conclusion of the women's game.
