Wildcats double up Boxers, tighten grip on NWC

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – A last inning comeback in Game 1 and a slugfest in Game 2 gave Linfield two wins Sunday afternoon to take the series against Pacific at the Boxers' home field.

Chelsea Horita collected five hits and went 5-for-6 on the day. Kamryn Apling continued her hot streak with two RBI in Game 2.

The pitching duo of Shelby Saylors and Tanna Benson dominated in the circle. Both pitchers went the distance and sit near the top of the Northwest Conference in wins. The doubleheader wins ruined Pacific's senior day.

GAME 1: Linfield 5, Pacific 4
A three-run rally in the seventh inning sparked a much-needed comeback for Linfield in the 5-4 victory.

The Wildcats wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Darian Stedman slapped a 2-RBI single to center field to score Maddy Colson and Kelsey Wilkinson.

Pacific had a big inning of its own in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Nishimura got an infield hit to score Lilly Meek. Amanda Machado followed right after with a single to center field to bring in Jill Uyeda from third. Later in the inning, a passed ball would bring in Nishimura.

The Boxers would add cushion to their lead in the fifth with an RBI single to center field off the bat of Uyeda to score Montana Vaught.

To start Linfield's late-game heroics, the Wildcats fought their way to a bases loaded situation. Makenna Clizer was hit by a pitch, giving Linfield a free run to start the rally. Up next, Abi Proffitt laced a single to center field to drive in Colson and Stedman.

Going the distance for the Wildcats once again, Saylors shut down the Boxers in the bottom of the seventh inning to close out the game.

With the win, Saylors improves to 15-4 on the season. It was also Saylors' 74th career win, making her Linfield's all-time record holder for career wins. The record (73) was previously held by Karina Paavola (2011-14).

GAME 2: Linfield 10, Pacific 2, 5 Innings
A one-sided hit parade and a strong outing by Benson led to a 10-2 mercy-rule victory for Linfield.

The Wildcats scored four runs in the first inning. After Friday's impressive hitting performance, Apling was moved up to the third spot in the Linfield lineup. She got things going for the Wildcats with a double to center field that drove in Colson and Katie Phillips. Stedman followed with a double down the right field line to score Apling. Proffitt would join the party as well with an RBI single to left field to drive in Stedman.

A single to left field by Phillips and a costly throwing error by the Boxers in the second inning would bring in another three runs for the Wildcats.

In the top of the third, the Boxers saw more of what Phillips could do with a bat in her hands. The freshman phenom would drive in two more runs with a double to left field score Paige Smotherman and Horita.

The Boxers finally got on the board in the fourth inning. Rylee Patton singled to right center to bring in Mekenzie Brock. Amanda Machado followed that up with a sacrifice fly to left to score Katelyn Macaitis-Smith.

Horita came to the plate in the top of the fifth with a mission. The junior slammed a leadoff home run to left field to put the Wildcats up by eight runs. It was her third homer of the season.

Pitching with a lead, Benson completed the mercy-rule win for the Wildcats. The senior gave up just six hits in the game and only walked one Pacific batter. She improves to 12-1 on the season.

With the doubleheader sweep, Linfield wins the series against Pacific 3-1. The No. 6 Wildcats improve to 28-5-1 and 21-2 in the Northwest Conference. Pacific drops to 23-12 and 17-7 in conference play.
