McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Erin Doyle and the St. Mary's Belles came out firing on all cylinders on the way to a dominating 20-2 victory over the Linfield Wildcats Wednesday night at Maxwell Field.
Doyle scored the first three goals over the initial seven minutes, helping St. Mary's build an overwhelming 13-0 advantage.
Linfield found back of the net with 15 seconds remaining in the first half when
Genna Hughes put the ball past starting Belles goalie Emily Kracker, making the score 13-1.
St. Mary's outshot Linfield 21-6 in the first half. The Wildcats committed 13 turnovers to the Belles' eight.
The second half started much like the first. St. Mary's netted six unanswered goals until Hughes scored again to make the score 19-2. A pinpoint pass from
Maddie Cole fed Hughes as she cut in front of the net. Hughes made an easy catch-and-shoot for the goal.
Doyle lead all scorers with eight goals and two assists. St. Mary's teammates Kate Kelly, Clare Theisen and Kendra Osinski all tallied three goals each.
"The score was not a true indication of how hard the ladies played," said interim coach
Brittany Hartmann. "They are still having fun playing the game no matter what the score may be. They just want to play for each other."
Hartmann was pleased with the play of backup netminder
Epi Roldan-Rayo, who replaced starter
Kylee Duey in goal for the final 11:30. Roldon-Rayo made two key saves, allowing one goal.
St. Mary's, located in Notre Dame, Indiana, moved to 4-0 for the season. The Belles completed an impressive spring swing through the Northwest, outscoring Puget Sound, Pacific and Linfield by a combined 60-7 differential. With the loss, Linfield slipped to 2-3.
