TACOMA, Wash. –
Emily Allen pounded six hits, including a grand slam home run in Game 2, and the Linfield Wildcats blazed past the Puget Sound Loggers in a Northwest Conference doubleheader Saturday at Logger Field.
In all, the Wildcats (4-3, 2-0 NWC) racked up 27 hits against the Loggers (2-9, 0-2 NWC), winning the opener 5-1 before rolling to a 17-4 win in the run-rule shortended nightcap.
GAME 1: Linfield 5, Puget Sound 1
Allen went 3 for 3 and drove in a couple of runs, and
Shelby Saylors struck out four Loggers to carry the 'Cats to victory in the opener.
Allen doubled to center field in the first inning to drive home
Cheyenne Fletcher for a quick 1-0 Linfield lead.
A single by
Chelsea Horita in the top of the third inning plated two runs. The Loggers answered with Erica Gott's run-scoring single, opening the door for Amber Popovich to score from third base.
In the sixth, Allen tapped a single to left, pushing home
Alana Nuttman. Allen later scored an unearned run after Puget Sound second baseman Camille Goo mishandled the ball, making the final score 5-1.
Saylors (2-2) went the distance in the pitching circle to earn the win. She allowed four hits and walked four.
Puget Sound starter Jessica Gott (1-5) suffered the loss. She yielded nine hits and seven walks while notching two strikeouts.
GAME 2: Linfield 17, Puget Sound 4, 5 innings
Allen repeated her Game 1 feat with another 3-for-3 performance. Both Allen and
Jessica Woodruff launched grand slams as Linfield built a 17-0 lead after 2½ innings.
Puget Sound countered with Goo's two-run single in the third inning. A bases-loaded walk, combined with Abby Brondos' RBI single in the fifth cut the lead to 17-4.
Jacinda Swiger tapped three hits and scored twice. Fletcher had two hits, including a home run while Oord, Woodruff,
Amanda Reser and
Makenna Clizer all registered two hits.
Linfield freshman
Eliza Rossman (2-0) pitched the game's first three innings to earn the win, giving up four hits and two runs.
Tanna Benson relieved Rossman in the fourth, issuing three walks and letting through two hits. Rossman and Benson combined for seven strikeouts.
Puget Sound starter Kasey Stern allowed six hits and five runs while recording just one out before being pulled in favor of Noelle Kerr. The Wildcats accounted for 18 hits in the game with Kerr charged with 12 of them.
