Wildcats shake off Boxers, win handily at home

McMINNVILLE, Ore. — Kory Oleson scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help the Linfield Wildcats down the Pacific Boxers 62-45 in a Northwest Conference contest Friday at Ted Wilson Gymnasium.
 
Linfield by the numbers
As a team, the Wildcats shot 38 percent from the field, including 27 percent from behind the three-point arc. They also bettered the Boxers in rebounds, assists and blocks.
 
Genna Hughes aided the Wildcats' effort with 10 points, seven rebounds and an assist. Bailey McDevitt had 11 points and four rebounds. Molly Danielson recorded a game-high 14 rebounds to go with seven points, while Erin Burns had three assists and five rebounds. Hanna Bingham came off the bench to contribute four points, and freshman Jordyn Feinauer added three points, two rebounds and an assist.
 
How it played out
The Boxers jumped out to an early lead, leading for over half of the first quarter. However, the Wildcats never wavered, taking the lead with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter. By the start of the second quarter, the 'Cats had built a 10-point advantage. The Wildcats continued to pull away from the Boxers in the second quarter, leading by as many 21 points in the first half. By the end of the third quarter, the Boxers brought the margin to within 13 points, but their efforts came up short, as the 'Cats went on to win by 17 points.
 
How the Boxers stacked up
Defensively, the Boxers forced 21 turnovers, but could not contain the Wildcats' offensive attack.
 
Courtney Carolan led Pacific in scoring with 11 points. She also added five rebounds and two steals.
 
Alexa Hinkley chipped in with eight points and five rebounds. Charli Elliott grabbed seven rebounds, scored seven points and forced two steals. Carly Kakuda added three assists and a pair of steals. Megan Wesel recorded six points and two assists.
 
What it means
The win boosts Linfield's overall record to 8-10 and conference record to 4-5. The Boxers slipped to 3-15, 2-8 in the NWC

Linfield visits the George Fox Bruins Saturday in Newberg at 4 p.m.
