Baseball setback in series finale at Puget Sound

TACOMA, Wash. --- Linfield baseball (21-16, 13-8 NWC) dropped just their second Northwest Conference series of the season on Sunday, falling 12-3 to the Puget Sound Loggers (21-13, 12-9 NWC).

Entering Sunday with the series tied 1-1, Puget Sound jumped on Linfield starter Jack Williams on the bottom of the first inning. Williams managed to strike out one after two singles led off the game for the Loggers. An RBI-single and a three-run home run put Puget Sound up 4-0 before two more singles knocked Williams out of the game. Jacob Bishop escaped the inning without further damage.

Two hit batters scored on a second three-run shot for Puget Sound in the home second, making it 7-0 Loggers.

Jaxson Kister and Jackson Bui reached to open up the top of the third, helping as Ely Kennel hit a three-run jack to right centerfield to cut into the lead; 7-3.

The Wildcats notched just two more hits over the next six innings, one of which being a Cole Hubka two-out double in the fifth. UPS added two runs in the fifth, and later three runs in the eighth to take the series with a 12-3 win on Sunday.

Linfield totaled just five hits to Puget Sound's 17, McClory was the lone Wildcat with a multi-hit performance while Kennel's three-run homer served as the 'Cats three runs in the game. Jack Williams moves to 3-2 on the mound this season after Sunday's shortened outing. Hampson logged the most innings on the bump, allowing two runs on seven hits over five innings in relief.

UP NEXT
The 'Cats finish the regular season next week with a three-game homestand against the Lewis & Clark River Otters. Entering the series, the two squads are tied in the NWC standings, one-game up on the Puget Sound Loggers. Linfield and Lewis & Clark have clinched their berth into the NWC Tournament, but will compete for the second, third, or fourth seeds.
