Wildcats lead after opening round of NWC Men’s Championship

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Fueled by standout performances from Zack LaPlaca and Ryder Ng, Linfield surged to the top of the team standings after Saturday's opening round of the Northwest Conference Men's Golf Championship at Michelbook Country Club.

The host Wildcats posted a team score of 295, finishing at 7-over par to claim a four-stroke lead over Whitman and Willamette, who are tied for second at 299 (+11).

LaPlaca carded a 3-under-par 69 to lead all players and sit atop the individual leaderboard after 18 holes. The junior's career day helped separate him from a crowded field and gave Linfield a critical anchor score.

Ng, a freshman, added a 1-under 71, joining a three-way tie for second. Douglas Bailey contributed a 76 (+4), while Kellen Hudson (79, +7) and Emerson Storer (80, +8) rounded out the Linfield scoring.

"What I'm most proud of is how composed the men stayed," said Linfield head coach Mitch Wilson. "They stuck to their game plans, managed the course well, and didn't try to force anything. It's easy to get caught up trying to do too much when you're playing at home, but they stayed patient and let the birdies come to them."

The Wildcats hold a solid lead after day one, but the competition lingers close behind. George Fox sits in fourth place at 300 (+12), followed by Pacific Lutheran in fifth at 301 (+13). Whitman's Grady Brown and Willamette's Brock Olson and AJ Papajohn each shot even-par 72 to tie for fifth individually.

"We know there's still work to do. There are a lot of great teams out here and plenty of golf left, so we'll reset tonight, stick to our routines, and come out ready to compete in Round 2."

The final round begins Sunday morning with the NWC title on the line.
