Men's soccer completes season with 1-1 draw against GFU

NEWBERG, Ore. --- Linfield men's soccer (2-14-4, 2-10-4 NWC) completed the season on Sunday afternoon across Yamhill, netting a 1-1 draw with the George Fox Bruins (5-9-6, 3-8-5 NWC).

After a pair of early saves by the George Fox keeper, Linfield broke through in the 34th minute. Ross Vargo scored the opening goal for the Wildcats at the 33:55 mark, finishing off a sequence that began with Stafford and Sam Haynes working down the field. Stafford's cross found Haynes, who delivered the assist to Vargo near the top of the box for a strike into the back of the net.

Following the goal, the Wildcats' defense tightened up behind Anderson Kelly and freshman  Don Moss. Linfield limited the Bruins to just four first-half shots, none of which required a save from Matty Hourigan, as the Wildcats took their one-goal advantage into halftime.

George Fox came out aggressive in the second half, testing Linfield's back line with eight corner kicks. Hourigan responded, making seven saves in the final 45 minutes to preserve the lead for much of the half

Despite Linfield's defensive resilience, George Fox found the equalizer in the 66th minute, making it 1-1.

Linfield nearly reclaimed the lead in the 70th minute when Stafford forced a diving save from Nelson after a shot through traffic, while Haynes fired over the crossbar minutes later. The Wildcats absorbed late pressure, and Hourigan's final save ensured Linfield held on for the draw.

Linfield recorded 10 total shots, with four on goal, compared to George Fox's 19. Hourigan finished with seven saves, all in the second half, in his first outing of the year.

With the season now finished, the Wildcats end the campaign in eighth-place in the Northwest Conference standings. Vargo led the Wildcats in scoring with seven goals and one assist, he was one of ten to find the back of the net this season. Senior Sam Haynes was the next-highest scorer, netting three goals and an assist. Four goalkeepers saw action this season, Jacob Toves made 13 starts, with 49 saves on 192 shots faced.
