Rising from a small Oregon town to national prominence, Linfield University's
Tyler McNeley is making the most of her debut season as a pitcher with NCAA Division III's top-ranked softball program.
On Tuesday, McNeley was honored as the 2024 Tucci/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Freshman of the Year.
Selected by the NFCA All-America Committee, McNeley emerged as the National Freshman of the Year from a list of 10 finalists, each representing Division III's 10 geographic regions. The award annually honors the outstanding athletic achievement by first-year players in Division III softball.
McNeley's impact on the Linfield's 2024 season cannot be understated. A heralded righthander from tiny Lakeview High School located near the Oregon-California border, McNeley has been impeccable in the circle. Posting a daunting 18-0 win-loss record and a 1.37 earned run average, she earned first team all-Northwest Conference and NWC Rookie of the Year honors, and added second team all-West Region recognition.
In 23 appearances this spring, she tossed eight complete games, recorded three shutouts and 81 strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .226 batting average.
Her exemplary season helped propel Linfield to victories in each its first 44 games. The Wildcats became just the second program in college softball history to record an unbeaten regular season.
McNeley proved to be the perfect complement alongside Linfield's two-time All-America pitcher
Tayah Kelley. Together, the pair established a new single-season program record for strikeouts and the second-highest win total in school history.
The Wildcats won the Northwest Conference regular-season championship, the NWC Tournament title, and prevailed in the NCAA McMinnville Regional and McMinnville Super Regional tournaments.
This week, Linfield (48-2) prepares to take on Tufts (38-8) in the opening game of the NCAA Division III Championship in Marshall, Texas. The Wildcats and Jumbos square off Thursday at 9 a.m. PDT.
