Ensrud claims podium finish at Mike Clock Open

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Despite a scary moment in a semifinal match Sunday, the Linfield men's wrestling team had a lot of positives to point to following the Mike Clock Open.

Wildcats junior Ethan Ensrud won four of his six matches to reach the podium, finishing fourth at the 13-team tournament to lead the Wildcats. One of his wins was by medical forfeit over teammate Jonathan Fagen, who was injured earlier in the day in his semifinal match at 197 pounds.

Facing Tejvir Dhinsa, who placed 12th at the U20 World Championships this year for Team Canada, Fagen attempted a mat return known as a "salto," and the two wrestlers ended up hitting heads violently. That knocked Fagen out of the tournament. Dhinsa went on to place first.

"He's going to be okay, but that was definitely scary," coach Frank Johnson said of Fagen.

Wildcats freshmen Nestor Diaz and Roan Zigenis won their first collegiate matches on Sunday as well. Diaz beat Shasta College's Garrison Palmer by a 9-3 decision and Zigenis pinned Shasta's Sequoyah Benally then won by medical forfeit over Southern Oregon's John White.

Graduate student Divenson Willis, who is a member of the Linfield football team this fall and was on the field for Saturday's win over Pacific Lutheran, turned around and wrestled Sunday at the Mike Clock tournament. He's normally a 197-pound wrestler, but bumped up a weight class to heavyweight this week. Giving up more than 60 pounds to each of his competitors, he nonetheless split his four matches with two wins and two losses.

"We had a lot of ups and downs today in terms of performance, but our guys can be really proud of their effort," Johnson said. "We had some guys get their first college wins, which was exciting. And this tournament gave us clear indication of specific things we need to work on with different guys. It's early in the season, and we need to get better in some of our positions. Now we just have to get back into the practice room and get back at it."
