Two Wildcat standouts went back to back as Northwest Conference Student-Athletes of the Week, spearheading a strong effort for Linfield in the spring season.
Â
Sarah Forester was named the NWC Women's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday, just seven days after she won the award for the first time in her collegiate career. On the diamond,
Tayah Kelley also repeated as the NWC Softball Pitcher Student-Athlete of the Week on Tuesday. No softball honorees were named last week due to postponed games across the conference.
Â
Forester went 2-0 in singles matches again and won both of her doubles matches as Linfield picked up NWC team victories over Willamette and George Fox. In a 9-0 sweep of Willamette on Saturday, Forester moved up to No. 2 singles and won by scores of 6-4 and 6-4. She and teammate
Alexis Garner took their No. 3 doubles match by a score of 8-1. Forester and Garner completed another 8-1 rout in No. 3 doubles in the Wildcats' 7-2 road win over George Fox on Sunday. The junior went back to No. 3 singles, winning 6-2, 6-2, to finish a perfect individual weekend.
Â
Kelley earned three wins in the circle in an NWC-opening sweep of Lewis & Clark. She allowed just four runs in her three appearances, striking out 19 batters along the way. The senior went the distance in a 4-3 win in Sunday's opener, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out nine Pioneers and walking none. In Game 3 on Monday, she threw a five-inning shutout as the 'Cats toppled the Pios, 8-0.
Â
In the series finale, Lewis & Clark scored eight runs in the fifth inning to avoid another mercy-rule loss. The Pios tied the game in the seventh to force extra innings, where the 'Cats eventually finished on top, 10-9, on a walk-off homer by
Brynn Nelson. Linfield was forced to throw Kelley back in the circle to close the game out. The defending NWC Pitcher of the Year tossed 4 1/3 innings in relief, allowing one run and striking out six to earn her sixth win of the season.
