McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Periods of rain, a brisk wind and temperatures in the 30s combined for less-than-ideal conditions for the 300 or so athletes who braved stormy conditions Saturday at Maxwell Field to compete in the annual Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker meet.
For all participants, the non-scoring meet marked the unofficial start of the outdoor track and field season.
WOMEN
Kenzie Feinglas won two individual events and carried the Linfield women to first-place results in both relays.
The 4x100 relay, comprised of
Hillary Connors,
Rachelle Silis,
Addie Klindt and Feinglas, captured first place in 51.26 seconds.
Feinglas was the only athlete to crack the 13-second barrier in the 100 dash on Saturday, crossing the finish line in 12.96.
Feinglas went on to prevail in the 200 dash in 26.23, crossing the finish line comfortably in front of runner-up Angelica Gatica Gomez of Pacific, who clocked 26.99.
Feinglas ended the day by teaming
Yahaira Rodriguez,
Jennifer Torres-Bermudez and
Justice McBride-Steiger to win gold in the 4x400 relay in 4:20.84.
Torres-Bermudez won the 1,500 run in 5:03.39, nearly five seconds ahead of runner-up Cydney Sanchez of Bushnell.
Mary Sturley was sixth in the same event in 5:12.73.
Sprinting straight into a strong headwind,
Nara Van De Grift took sixth place in the 100 hurdles race, clocking 18.28 seconds. In the 400 hurdles, Rodriguez placed fifth in 1:15.10.
MEN
Linfield's 4x100-meter relay, featuring
Des Phillips,
Evan Fisette,
Chandler Morris and
Dylan Jackson, stormed from behind to share first place with Lane Community College. Both squads finished the one-lap race in a dead heat, both with marks of 43.20 seconds.
Jacob Slifka registered the best mark in the discus with a season-opening effort of 144 feet, 4 inches, a full 17 feet longer than the next closest competitor.
In a photo finish in the 400 dash, Morris was nipped by .03 at the tape by Osman Osman of Treasure Valley, 51.02 to 51.05.
Jackson took third in a competitive 200 dash in 22.84 while Morris claimed seventh in 23.45.

Matt Metcalf came in third at 176-10.
Calvin Cahill turned in a stellar performance in the 1,500 run, taking fifth place in 4:14.11.
