FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Linfield men's and women's wrestling teams concluded the regular season on Monday by sweeping rival Pacific University in a pair of road duals. In front of a vocal partisan crowd at Pacific's Stoller Center, the Linfield men's team came from behind to beat the host Boxers 32-21 while the Wildcat women raced to a 30-4 victory, improving their season dual-meet records to 6-3 and 4-5, respectively.
This season marked Linfield's first with NCAA wrestling programs, so both rosters are composed largely of freshmen. The Wildcats fielded a men's wrestling team until 1986, which competed at the NAIA level at the time.
Linfield was missing its starting 125-pound wrestler, so ended up staking Pacific to an early 6-0 lead Monday night.
Kellen Hanson then ground out a close 6-4 win at 133,
Jakob Jarvis pinned Pacific's Aidan Lybarager at 141 and
Micah Worthington collected a forfeit at 149 to pull the Wildcats briefly back in front.
The Boxers retook the lead 18-15 after a pin at 157 and a forfeit at 165, so the dual was going to come down to the upper weights. Linfield was up to the moment, winning three of the final four matches, collecting bonus points in each, to clinch the win.
Price Pothier dominated in an 18-3 tech fall at 174,
Lucien Lefebvre kept things close in a hard-fought 11-8 loss by decision at 184, then the 'Cats
Darrius Walker silenced the home crowd and turned the dual by dominating and ultimately collecting a pin at 197. To close things out, Linfield's
Jacob Barnes improved his season record to 24-2 by collecting a quick pin at heavyweight.
The women's dual had far less drama. Linfield accepted five forfeits to have the dual locked up before it started. In the two matches that were contested, the teams split a pair of matches. The Wildcats'
Brielle Brick pinned Pacific's Samantha Shipley in the opening round at 130 in the highlight of the women's matches.
