BURNABY, British Columbia – Linfield kicked off its second season of NCAA wrestling on Friday with a partial squad visit to Division II Simon Fraser University. The Linfield women wrestled a second dual against No. 24-ranked Texas Woman's University. The Wildcats will stick around Saturday to compete in the SFU International Open.
The early start date meant that not all Linfield student-athletes were able to make the trip, and virtually none of those that did were certified to compete at their in-season weights. Linfield contested only four of the 10 weight classes in two duals, and five of 10 weight classes in a third dual.
"It's good just to see where everyone is at and how they compete," said
Frank Johnson, Linfield's first-year coach.
The bright spot for the Wildcat women was a dramatic 4-3 win by sophomore
Ayana Medina over Simon Fraser's Mikaela Trolland in the opening dual. The Red Leafs, who return two All-Americans and two 2023 junior Canadian national champions from a team that finished sixth at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships last season, topped Linfield 38-3 to start this season.
In the second women's dual, Linfield gave up five forfeits on the way to a 44-0 loss to Texas Woman's.
"The first time competing after some time off the mat, there will be rust," said
Alyssa Lampe, who coaches the Linfield women. "I'm proud of the way our wrestlers kept their composure and stayed in high spirits against teams with full rosters and a lot of women's wrestling history. We'll have better days ahead."
On the men's mat, Linfield won two of the four matches in which they wrestled against Simon Fraser.
Darrius Walker at 197 lbs and
Jack Parrott at heavyweight both pinned their Red Leaf opponents. But Linfield gave up five forfeits on the way to a 38-12 loss to SFU.
