BURNABY, British Columbia – The Linfield men's wrestling team wrestled with freestyle rules for the only time this season on Saturday, and had a rough time of it against Canadian wrestlers who compete almost exclusively in the Olympic style. College women in the United States also compete with freestyle rules, so the SFU International Open on Saturday was more of a normal event for the Linfield women. 
 
The tournament kept a combined team score with both men and women. Linfield placed 14th among 23 teams at the event hosted by NCAA Division II Simon Fraser University.

Heavyweight Jack Parrott led Linfield men with a fifth-place finish at 125 kg, and Klaira Flatt led the Wildcat women with a sixth-place finish at 65 kg. Alyssa Lampe, who coaches the Linfield women, jumped in and competed alongside the Wildcats, finishing third at 55 kg. 
 
"There were a lot of bright spots, especially with some of our newcomers," said Linfield coach Frank Johnson. "We're young, but I think we're going to surprise a lot of people by the end of the year."  
 
Parrott, who pinned his Simon Fraser opponent in a dual meet Friday night, followed up on Saturday with a 29-second pin of Bjorn Nelson of the University of Alberta and then a win by injury default over the same Simon Fraser opponent he faced the night before. 
 
Two Linfield wrestlers battled in the highest-scoring match of the entire tournament. In the 86 kg men's bracket, Wildcat freshman Ethan Ensrud and sophomore Darrius Walker met in the consolation rounds. Wrestling freestyle, which they don't do in the practice room normally, Ensrud outscored Walker 22-15 to move within one round of placing. 
 
Flatt claimed her spot on the podium with a 15-7 win over Simon Fraser's Rayne Tafreshi, who is redshirting this year and was wrestling unattached Saturday. 
 
"We have room to grow, and we will," Lampe said, "but I'm proud of how our wrestlers cheered each other on and stayed focused today. This is a good group, and they take care of each other."
