'Cats topple four-time JC national champs, fall to Division I OSU

CORVALLIS, Ore. – It was an up-and-down day for the Linfield men's wrestling team at Oregon State University's Gill Coliseum on Sunday.

The day began with the Wildcats scoring an impressive 27-18 victory over the four-time defending National Junior College Athletics Association champion Clackamas Community College Cougars.

Victories by Jacob Moore (125 pounds), Micah Worthington (149), Price Pothier (184) and Jacob Barnes (HWT), fueled the Linfield triumph. The Wildcats benefited additionally by forfeit wins credited to Joel Nelson at 133 and Josh Cox at 157.

The highlight of the Clackamas match came at 149 pounds, where Worthington emerged with a pin over Dante Oliverio.

Other significant results included Moore locking up a close 11-9 decision over Clackamas's Thomas Lavigne and Pothier collecting a 5-4 decision from the Cougars' Marshall Rodenbeck. Barnes, who began his college wrestling career last winter at OSU, carved out a 2-1 result over Braden Pease.

Later Sunday, the Wildcats faced host Oregon State in a counting dual meet. Not surprisingly, the Division I Beavers had their way with Linfield's first-year program, winning by a 45-3 count.

Coach Chad Hanke entered a full lineup but the stronger and more experienced Beavers went on to prevail with pins in four of the 10 head-to-head pairings.

Linfield's lone victory versus OSU came in the final event, where Barnes, a McMinnville local, won a 2-1 decision over Charlie Hastriter in the heavyweight classification.

The closest contest among those reaching the full duration was turned in by Worthington, who dropped a tight 3-2 decision to the Beavers' Hunter Eveland at 149.
