Wildcats fall to red-hot Boxers to open 2022

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Linfield women's basketball team outscored Pacific in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to top the Boxers in a 73-52 loss Tuesday night at Ted Wilson Gymnasium.
 
Pacific extended its winning streak to six games, improving to 10-3 on the season and an undefeated 4-0 in Northwest Conference play. The Boxers made 41.3 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range. They made 57.9 percent of their shots in the first quarter to take an early 25-15 lead. The Boxers scored 30 points in the paint and 23 points on second chance opportunities.
 
Rilee Price led the Boxers offensively with 18 points, connecting on 7 of 13 from the field and 3 of 6 from beyond the arc. She also finished with five rebounds, four steals and an assist. Brilie Kovaloff dropped 13 points to go with a game-high seven rebounds while Madison Dunlop also scored in double figures with 10 points.
 
Linfield opened the game shooting 50 percent from the field in the first quarter. The Wildcats struggled to create scoring opportunities in the middle stages of the game, scoring 10 points in the second quarter and 11 points in the third. The 'Cats matched the Boxers in scoring 30 points in the paint, but the Boxers outrebounded the 'Cats 48-22.
 
Gillyan Landis led the 'Cats with a game-high 19 points on 8 of 10 from the field, 2 of 3 from three and 1 of 1 from the charity stripe. The freshman forward also tallied three blocks and a rebound. Freshman guard Emma Schmerbach just missed double digits with nine points, making 4 of 8 from the field. She also contributed four blocks, a pair of rebounds and a steal. Junior guard Janessa Yniguez wasn't far behind Schmerbach with seven points.

The 'Cats (0-11, 0-3 NWC) will look to pick up their first win of the season on Saturday, playing at cross-county rival George Fox at 4 p.m.
