'Cats split again at Colorado College Classic

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Replicating its success from Friday, the Linfield volleyball team beat St. Catherine, 3-1, before losing in straight sets to host and No. 2 Colorado College at El Pomar Sports Center.
 
The Wildcats topped St. Catherine by scores of 25-23, 27-25, 17-25 and 25-18. The 'Cats lost to Colorado College by scores of 25-23, 25-15 and 25-17.
 
MATCH 1
The Wildcats totaled 49 kills, 10 blocks, 47 assists, 68 digs and a .143 hitting percentage while limiting St. Catherine to 41 kills on 152 attempts.
 
"We're proud of the way the team fought today," head coach Haley Domeck said. "We came out tough against a strong St. Kate's team."
 
Junior outside hitter Raelynn Hammock finished with a season-high 17 kills to go with five aces, two blocks and 12 digs. Junior middle blocker Ellie Mead contributed nine kills of her own with five blocks and two digs.
 
Juniors Kara Thomas and Seraiah Ochse finished with eight and seven kills, respectively, while junior libero Maya Nakasone led the team with 14 digs. Junior setter Aylea Dixon set the 'Cats up on offense with 43 assists.
 
"Throughout the match, we focused on limiting our errors and controlling pace on our side of the net," Domeck said. "All 21 of our student-athletes came out with energy and we're very proud of them."
 
MATCH 2
In three competitive sets, the Wildcats just couldn't overcome the No. 2-ranked team in the nation.
 
"When we took the court against Colorado College, we played with grit," Domeck said. "We've talked about playing with heart, grit and determination. This was a true test of how gritty we are."
 
Georgia Mullins and Isabella Vasquez led the Tigers again with double-digit kills. Mullins led the team with 12 kills and four aces to go with a .450 hitting percentage and four digs. Vasquez finished with 10 kills, a .259 hitting percentage, three aces and five digs.
 
Hammock led the 'Cats again with 11 kills with three aces, and 15 digs. Mead also had a respectable seven kills and a pair of blocks.
 
"We fought to the end," Domeck said. "We are proud of the team for going 2-2 in a tough tournament."
 
NEXT
The 'Cats are now 2-2 on the season and will return home to host NAIA Warner Pacific at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7.
