First-year runners race well at season-opening Harrier Classic

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – First-year Linfield runners Alex Oathout, Calvin Cahill and Bradley Kiltow turned in top-10 performances during their collegiate debuts Friday, and Jennifer Torres Bermudez and Makayla Erickson set the pace for the Wildcat women at the season-opening Harrier Classic thoughout spacious Joe Dancer Park.
 
Oathout and Kiltow, both true freshman looked sharp, as did Cahill, a sophomore in academic standing but who did not have the opportunity for a freshman cross country season last fall due to COVID.
 
Oathout placed fourth over the eight-kilometer men's course, clocking 20:34, just 21 seconds behind Lane Community College's Wiley Watts, who won the race in 20:13. Cahill followed in seventh place in 21:20 while Kiltow claimed ninth place in 21:27.
 
Torres Bermudez, another sophomore who was denied a freshman running campaign, showed her abilities with a seventh-place effort. Her time of 16:51 was 57 seconds off the pace of eventual winner Piper Crook of Lane CC who crossed the finish lin in 15:54.
 
Erickson was eighth, just two seconds behind Torres Bermudez in 16:53. Ashley Ambrose captured 11th place in 17:17. Holly Riley (18th in 17:50), Kaylee Delzotti (19th in 18:00) and Samantha Kasitz (20th in 18:11) rounded out the top 20 women's finishers.
 
NEXT
Linfield heads to Monmonth on Friday to compete at the Ash Creek Invitational. First race begins at 5 p.m. at the Ash Creek Preserve adjacent to the Western Oregon University campus.
